Fern Rising

Theme at MQS 2014: Up, up and away!

“Fern Rising” is a tribute to the strength and energy it takes to rise upfrom the shadows; up to meet the renewing rays of the sun. The leaves were painted on the prepared swirls – using freezer paper for applique. the shadows were then applied to each appliqué. I used the same technique for the silk bubbles.

You can see through the application of gauze, small flecks of colored foils and other fabrics that have been applied to the pieced background consisting of 1 1/2″ squares of hand dyed Dupioni silk. More than 27,000 Swarovski crystals represent the elusive fern flower.
